We are fortunate that King’s Somborne retains the essential features of a traditional English village community: a Church, a pub, a social club, a school, shops and playing fields.
The oldest and most important building in the village is the 12th century Church of St Peter and St Paul. Built under the Normans, knocked about by Cromwell and restored by the Victorians, it survives as a symbol of our long heritage.
To date the Church has been lovingly cared for by the Parochial Church Council but any historic building needs continual maintenance and renewal. In the next 10 years the Church is likely to need up to £130,000 spent on it, which is more than can be raised from the current congregation.
The Friends has therefore been formed to ensure that funds are raised to preserve and enhance the Church building.
The congregation will still be responsible for the costs of running the Church and its religious activities.
Why become a Friend?
The Friends will enable the whole
community to help preserve this historic building by making a regular contribution, whether a churchgoer or not.
-
Contribute to our heritage
As a Friend you will be showing your
commitment to supporting our village
community by helping preserve our heritage.
-
Be part of village Life
There will be a small number of enjoyable events each year with fellow Friends and guests.
-
Keep in touch with our work
Friends will receive regular updates on the progress of work on the Church.
There is already a list of urgent repairs to be carried out ranging from roof renovations to vital upkeep of the leaded windows and stonework.
Internal improvements are also needed to make the building more useful as a venue and meeting place for village organisations and for the school.
